Witch's Transformation Cape - Into the Woods

Design Concept & Execution

For Carnegie Mellon University's production of Into the Woods, I was asked to drape, pattern, and construct the Witch's transformation cape. This cape was a key garment that made the character appear old and haggard at the beginning of the show, but when the cape transformed it revealed the Witch's younger and sexier dress hidden beneath. Collaborating with the Costume Designer, Oona Natesan, we accomplished this by using the hem of the cape to cowl around the actress' body and secured it to the neckline with a hidden drawstring. When the drawstring was pulled, it released the hem of the cape to the floor in a dramatic fashion that concluded the end of Act I.
